RICHARD E. NICKERSON

Richard E. Nickerson, 93, of Edgewood, passed away peacefully at home December 9, 2015. Born in Providence, the eldest of son of the late Leon E. and Alice J. (Jenks) Nickerson. He was the husband of the late Elisabeth W. Nickerson, to whom he was married for 58 years.

Richard graduated from Cranston High School in 1940, Hebron Academy in 1941(Cum laude) and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1945. He was sent to gunnery school in Norfolk Virginia, then to the destroyer McLananhan in the Mediterranean and eventually was assigned to troop transport ship Robert E Callen. Richard worked for DuPont for 35 Years before retiring in 1982.

Richard, fondly called "Papa Nick" by many, was known for his love of boats and his talent as a yachtsman. He sailed his entire life, beginning as a boy in a Beetle boat and ending with cruising on his beloved trawler, "Mistress". He loved racing sailboats and was on many committees running local races and some major international sailboat races sponsored by Rolex. He was a member of the Edgewood Yacht Club, the St Thomas Yacht Club, Off Soundings, Twenty Hundred Club and the NBYA.

Richard is survived by his loving daughter, Tracy J. Nickerson of Edgewood and beloved brother Russell J. Nickerson of Mystic, CT. He was preceded by his son Peter W. Nickerson and his brother Robert B. Nickerson.

Funeral Service Wednesday at 10 A.M. at the Church of Transfiguration, 1665 Broad Street, Cranston, R.I.

Calling Hours Tuesday 4:00-7:00 P.M. at the Jones-Walton-Sheridan Funeral Home, 1895 Broad St. at Park Ave., Cranston, R.I. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to in his name to a charity of your choice.
