Philip O'Hara Obituary

Philip J. O’Hara formally of Edgewood, Cranston, RI died peacefully Friday, November 24, 2023 after spending the Thanksgiving holiday surrounded by his family. Philip (Pete), the youngest son of Helene (nee Monahan) and Philip J. O’Hara was born on March 15, 1935 in Montague MA. Pete was raised in Greenfield MA and attended Holy Trinity Elementary, Deerfield Academy, and Providence College. Following graduation, he proudly served in the U.S. Army Security Agency (ASA) as a 1st Lieutenant.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Ellen (Crosby) O’Hara; children Conor and his wife Ronnie, Danny, Kate, Megan, Pete, and Tim and his wife Diana; grandchildren Elana and her husband Mitch, Joshua, Finlay, Ian, Carlin, Greysen, Lilly, Tucker, and Sadie; and great-granddaughter Shay.

Pete worked for New England Butt Company in Providence, RI for 30 years, eventually establishing his own business, Production Machine. He retired in 2015.

He was a member of March of Dimes, serving a term as President of the RI chapter when the fundraiser walkathon was established. He and Ellen had many great adventures, traveling with friends or as a couple to Europe, the Middle East, the Caribbean, and across the US. He sang for many years with the Boston Saengerfest Male Chorus (Welch Chorus), an à cappella group that sings in numerous charity and fundraising concerts throughout New England, most notably naturalization ceremonies in MA welcoming new citizens and the biennial Albert Hall Welsh Male Chorus Festival in London, England. He was an avid fan of local sports teams including the Red Sox, Patriots, and PC Friars. He enjoyed playing cribbage and spent many summers at Ellen’s family cottage on Lake Winnipesaukee, NH with friends and family.

Pete loved to cook for his large family, be the first to call you on your birthday, always be there for a friend in need, visit a sick friend, share what he grew in his garden, be the first to volunteer and always stick around to help clean up.  He inspired his children with his terrific work ethic, his insistence on fairness for all, and by treating everyone, no matter who, with respect and kindness.

Visiting hours for Pete will be on December 10th from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at Jones-Walton-Sheridan Funeral Home, 1895 Broad St, Cranston.
