Chisholm, Mary Helen (Collins), 90, of Narragansett Blvd., an Editorial Assistant nights in the Providence Journal newsroom from 1959 to 1986, passed away May 5, 2015 at Philip Hulltar Hospice Care Center. Mrs. Chisholm had complications from a fall that had occurred previously. Her husband, the late James C. Chisholm had passed away in 1993, the 46th year of their marriage.
Prior to the birth of her sons Mary was a legal secretary and had also been in Federal Service with the Veterans Administration in its Providence loan guaranty and Woonsocket contact offices.
The only child of the late John F. Collins and the late Ida M. (Roper) Collins-Murphy, she was born April 1, 1925 in Providence and lived in Edgewood since 1961. A June 1942 Rhode Island Honor Society graduate of Central High School and class secretary, she served on all its reunion committees.
Mary was a lifelong sports enthusiast who won medals in various CVS/Cranston Senior games, bowled in several duckpin leagues and a known fan of Cranston East Football, basketball and volleyball. While in the RSVP of the Cranston Senior Center she was a reader for in-sight radio and a Friendly Visitor. An independent and outgoing personality, Mary cherished lifelong friendships.
Her son Scott J. Chisholm, died in 1994, and her son Terrence “Red” Chisholm died in 2009. She will always be remembered and missed by her grandsons and their wives, James R. (Sandy), Jessie (Filomena) Chisholm both of Cranston, David V. (Laura) Chisholm of Coatsville, Pa. and Patrick Chisholm of Smithfield, her great-grandchildren Adora, Brennan, Olivia Lynn, Caiden, Evan, Drew and Tyler, as well as her daughter in law, Maria Y. Chisholm of Cranston.
Funeral Service Tuesday at 10:00 AM in the Jones-Walton-Sheridan Funeral Home, 1895 Broad St., at Park Ave., Cranston, R.I. Burial will be held at RI Veterans Cemetery, Exeter, RI
