John W. Schneider, Jr.

John W. Schneider Jr., 71, died unexpectedly on February 20, 2021, at Kent County Hospital.  Born in Providence, he was the son of the late J. Walter and Rita M. (Sheridan) Schneider.  He was a Rhode Island State Trooper for twenty years where he was affectionately dubbed with the nickname “Duke”.  Highly esteemed by his colleagues, John earned commendations during his service attesting to his dedication, quick thinking, and unimpeachable character.  John also served in the United States Army reserves where he was a trained medic.  

He was the beloved companion of Paula Lynch with whom he has long resided in Cranston. He is survived by his three sons, Kevin and Brian, both of Cranston, and Timothy of Troy, VT.  He also leaves 6 grandchildren:  Brian’s daughter Brianna, Kevin’s children, Ashley, Maverick, and Justin, and Timothy’s children Matthew and Jason, and a great-granddaughter Emily (Timothy’s granddaughter) and his daughter-in-law Christine. He also leaves his longtime friend and former spouse, Eleanor Schneider.

John was preceded in death by his two sisters, and one brother, Patricia M., Mary E., and James P. Schneider.  His brother Mark R. Schneider of Warwick (sister-in-law Patty and their 3 sons) survives him.  

John was a golfer and an avid sports fan.  He leaves behind a host of friends, including Bill W., and a legacy of treating others with respect, accepting people as he found them, discipline, inner strength, and a wonderful sense of humor.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10:00 AM at St. Paul’s Church in Edgewood, One Warwick Avenue, Cranston.  Burial will be held at St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston, RI.  Calling Hours respectfully omitted.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Doctors Without Borders USA, P.O.
