John B. Costello Obituary

Costello, John Bernard, 84, died peacefully at his home in Narragansett on July 9, 2022.  He was surrounded by his wife of 59 years Ann Waterman Costello and their five children.

The middle child of the late Jessie Teeden Costello Landrigan and Raymond Francis Costello, John was born on March 2, 1938 in Providence, RI and spent his early years in Pawtucket and Providence.

John was a man of strong faith and exemplary character, a respected leader, role model, and fierce competitor with a legendary wit and sense of humor.  He valued hard work and exhibited humility and kindness in every aspect of his life, both personally and professionally. He had a successful career as owner and president of US Packing Corporation for 25 years.  After selling his company, John was an active real estate investor in Florida.

As a teenager and young adult, John worked for his family’s company, Costello Brothers. Immediately following his graduation from Boston College in 1961, John married Ann Costello and they lived in East Greenwich, RI for a few years before moving to Greenwich, CT and raising their family there.   Of everything John was able to build over the course of his life, nothing made him prouder than his family. Ann, was the love of his life and he was ever inspired by the character and accomplishments of his sons and daughters, including Michael (Jamie), Kevin (Christine), Megan Bisset (Davies), Kate Kaplan (Jon) and Brian (Linda). He was a devoted and proud grandfather to his 13 beautiful grandchildren, including Jake, Claire and William Costello; Molly, Lucy and Sophie Bisset; Grace, Finn and Campbell Kaplan; Caroline, Piper and Archer Costello and Charlie Costello.  John was pre-deceased by his two sisters, Alice Boss-Altman and Betty Ann Sheridan.

John enjoyed his time in Hobe Sound, FL where he and Ann had a home for more than 30 years, but he always relished his return to Rhode Island each summer, enjoying time with family and friends on the beach and the golf course.  He was known for his early morning ocean swims and was a fierce competitor on the golf course, squash court, backgammon

table or in a game of poker.  John was the partner you wanted for the clutch putt or crucial shot in any match.  During the last 10 years of his life John’s health was failing.  Despite numerous ailments when he was asked how he was doing he always replied, “Never Better!”.  A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Thomas More Church, 53 Rockland St., Narragansett on Friday July 15th at 11:00 AM

Calling hours will be from 4-7 PM on Thursday July 14th at the Jones-Walton-Sheridan Funeral Home, 1895 Broad Street, Cranston.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions may be made to HopeHealth in Providence
