John Murtagh Obituary

John F. “Jack” Murtagh, 89, passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at his home In West Warwick surrounded by his loving family.  He was born in Providence on November 25, 1934, and spent much of his life living in Cranston.  He is the son of John J. Murtagh and Evelyn (Studley) Murtagh.  He served with the Providence Police Department as a patrolman and detective from 1960 through 1981.  Jack had a zest for life and a great sense of humor and wit.  He was a colorful and memorable person to the people he met throughout his life.

Jack is survived by his loving wife Sylvia (Mattera) Murtagh, son Mark Murtagh, daughter-in-law Patricia Murtagh (Shine), grandsons Sean and Patrick Murtagh, and stepsons Jim, Michael and David Ravo. Jack also leaves behind numerous stepdaughters-in-law and grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, September 7th from 9:00-11:00 A.M. and the funeral service will follow and be held at 11:00 AM at the Jones-Walton-Sheridan Funeral Home, 1895 Broad Street, Cranston. (Corner of Park Ave. and Broad St.)

In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s name may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org).
