Jean-Ann (Pettis), 78, of Pawtuxet Village, passed peacefully January 2, 2025 at HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence, RI where she was surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Providence, the daughter of the late Frank C. Pettis Jr. and Jean (Brindle) Pettis. Jean-Ann was the mother of Joanna (Sherry) King, her husband Joshua, and the adoring grandmother of Julianna. She was the sister of Sandra (Pettis) Cuddy and the late Frank C. “Skip” Pettis III. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews Lenoard Upham III, Janiece (Upham) Piechocki, Michael Cuddy Jr, Peter Cuddy, Joy Pettis and Holly Pettis.
As a distinguished educator for 44 years, Jean-Ann’s passion for learning and sharing knowledge inspired those around her. “Ms. Sherry” shaped the lives of countless students, all of whom learned from her in classroom 205 while teaching general science at Gorton Junior High School. Her dedication to teaching was contagious, inspiring not only her students, but also her colleagues. An avid reader with an insatiable curiosity, Jean-Ann found great joy in reviewing science articles and engaging in thoughtful discussions, touching on the latest discoveries and current events. More recently, her greatest joy stemmed from celebrating milestones with her granddaughter, Julianna, as well as spending time with her beloved grand-pup, Cali.
A dedicated member of her community, she shared her passion for learning and service supporting organizations such as local public libraries and the Edgewood Garden Club, continuing the legacy of her mother Jean. Jean-Ann was philanthropic and loved helping those in need. Her generosity benefited many organizations including St. Jude, House of Hope, St. Joseph’s school, ASPCA, local food banks and Trinity Church. Jean-Ann earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences with a concentration in Zoology from the University of Rhode Island. She was also a member of the Delta Delta Delta, “Tri Delta”, women's fraternity. Over the years she continued her educational pursuits, concentrating on communication disorders, which inspired Joanna to pursue a successful career in Speech Pathology. Jean-Ann's mark on this earth, including her unwavering kindness, strong will, and unconditional love for her family will forever be cherished.
The funeral will be held Monday, January 6, 2025, 10:00 a.m. at Trinity Church, 139 Ocean Ave., Cranston, RI. Burial will take place at Swan Point Cemetery, 585 Blackstone Blvd., Providence, RI.
