Schneider, J. Walter, 83, of Cranston died peacefully on November 23, 2007. He was married to the late Rita M. (Sheridan) Schneider for 58 years.
Walter was born in Edgewood. The son of John W. and Madeline (McWilliams) Schneider. A graduate of Cranston High School East after graduation Walter joined the Army and served in WWII. He participated in 6 campaigns including Air Offensive, Europe, Normandy, North France, Rhineland Ardennes and Central Europe. He was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery, rescuing a fellow soldier who had exploded a mine field. Other men were reluctant to enter the mine field. Walter made his way to the casualty, rendered first aid and carried the casualty out and to an awaiting ambulance. The personal bravery of Mr. Schneider in disregarding danger to himself in order to assist one of his comrades was worthy of emulation. Walter was employed by Costello Bros. and later by Sheridan Realty. His fervent wife Rita will be waiting for him with open arms.
He was the father of John W. Schneider Jr. Ret. RISP and Mark R. Schneider and his wife Patricia and the late Patricia M., James P. and Mary E. Schneider, brother of Sister Mercille, Immaculate Heart (Elizabeth Schneider) and the late Margaret J. Alsfeld, Ann Johnson, Madelyn Kalberer, grandfather of 7 and great grandfather of 4.
Funeral Tuesday at 9:00am from the Jones-Walton-Sheridan Funeral Home, 1895 Broad St. at Park Ave, Cranston, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Paul Church of Edgewood, One St. Paul Pl., Cranston at 10:00am. Burial with military honors will be held at St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. Calling Hours Monday 4-7 pm
