Donald Joseph McGee, 85, of Edgewood, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully on May 29th, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Thomas and Anna McGee and the third youngest in a close-knit family of nine children. From an early age, Donald valued family, loyalty, and hard work—principles that guided him throughout his life.
As a young teenager, he met Patricia Corry, the girl who would later become the love of his life. Their paths first crossed as she walked her Dalmatian, Nellie Belle, past his home. Their bond remained strong, even when Donald enlisted in the U.S. Army at just 16 years old, without his parents’ permission. Ultimately, he transferred to the U.S. Air Force, where he served his country with honor, stationed in locations from Texas to Greenland.
Upon his return to civilian life, Donald married his childhood sweetheart Patricia. Together, they built a life rooted in love and devotion, raising four children: Tom (Sara) Karen (Jim) Nancy, and Kevin (Colleen)
Donald began his professional career tending bar at The Dugout, his father-in-law’s well-known local pub. He later became a dedicated Teamster, working for Smith Transfer and Jorason Transport at the Port of Providence. After retiring from his work as a truck driver, he continued serving his community by managing CDL testing for the State of Rhode Island. He also worked as a supervisor for his son’s company, New England Stevedore Services in Davisville.
Donald’s greatest joy came from time spent with his family. He especially cherished his role as a grandfather and took immense pride in the lives and accomplishments of his grandchildren: Andrew (Victoria), Allissondra, Connor, Cassidy, and Kiley.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Patricia, his eight siblings—Anna, Joan, Dotty, Thomas, Walter, Jimmy, Bobby, and Dennis—and his cherished family dog, Koko.
In addition to his children and grandchildren, Donald leaves behind many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will remember him with love and respect.
Burial and Christian funeral Mass will be private. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to: give.oligonation.org
