Butler, Alan W., 93, of Cranston, beloved husband of 64 years to the late Barbara (Hunt) Butler, passed away November 5, 2014.
Born in Providence he was the son of the late Marion (French) and Ward Butler. He was the brother of the late Elizabeth Corr.
He is survived by son; Alan M. Butler and wife Rene Koszerowski, daughter; Sally B. Garneski and husband Charles, grandson; Nicholas Garneski, granddaughter; Dr. Kelly Paulson and husband Dr. Benjamin Paulson, great grandson; Matthew Paulson, nephew; Peter Corr and niece; Leslie Ryan.
A Navy veteran of WWII and career firefighter, Alan rose to the rank of Chief of the Newport Naval Fire Department. He also served as Chief of the Pawtuxet Volunteer Fire Dept. He was awarded the Carnegie Medal for Heroism for his rescue of the pilot from a burning tanker.
A lifelong boater, he often cruised New England coast and Narragansett Bay.
His Funeral Service will be Saturday at 11:00 am at the Jones-Walton-Sheridan Funeral Home, 1895 Broad St., Cranston. Calling hours Friday 4:00-7:00pm. Burial will be in Pawtuxet Memorial Park, Warwick. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the local charity of your choice.
