The Reverend Deacon Iris E. (Morton) Mello, 80, of Warwick, RI died on January 18, 2020.
Iris was born on July 3, 1939 in East Providence to the late William and Edith Morton. On October 12, 1957 she married the late Charles E. Mello, her high school sweetheart. She was a graduate of East Providence High School, class of 1957, Roger Williams University (B.S.) and the University of Rhode Island (Masters of Marriage and Family Therapy). Together they raised four children in the Edgewood neighborhood of Cranston, RI.
Iris is survived by her children Beverly Melfi (Nicolas) of Cranston, Steven Mello of Warwick and The Reverend Jeffrey Mello (Paul Daigneault) of Brookline, MA. She also leaves behind eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren and her nephew Kenneth Vale. She was preceded in death by her son Gregory Mello and her siblings Beverly Vale, Earle Morton and Warren Morton.
Iris worked for many years as a Marriage and Family Therapist in private practice. She was an associate of the Sisters of the Holy Nativity. She was ordained a Deacon in the Episcopal church in 1984, the first class of Deacons, and served many parishes. She was also a small business owner and worked for many years out of her home while her children were young.
Visiting hours will be Friday, January 31 from 5:00-8:00pm at Jones-Walton-Sheridan Funeral Home, 1895 Broad St., Cranston RI. A service of Christian Burial will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, Pawtuxet, RI on Saturday, February 1 at 11am.
